Trinket #171 - Luna Moth Brooch

I read Eric Carle's "The Very Quiet Cricket" to my son last night at bedtime. When we came to the page with the luna moth, he immediately perked up and had a ton of questions about them. "How big are they? Are they really bright green?" On an on.

Tonight, I was out in the garage on the treadmill when something large swooped in through the open garage door. After my initial duck for safety, I realized that it was a luna moth. (Strangely, before today I had only ever seen the larvae around here, never the moth.) I hurried to the house and called my son out to take a look at it, but by the time we got back to the garage, it had escaped.

In the hopes of not letting the kid down too much, I tried to redeem the loss by creating this life-size moth brooch. It is made from tissue paper, double-sided tape, and a self adhesive brooch pin.

Trinket #170 - Clockwork Brooch

In the interest of full disclosure, I purchased the bones for this brooch as a necklace from Etsy. It never worked well as a necklace, so I moved a few bits around, added a couple of little things, and attached the whole construction to a brooch pin. I think this reinvented trinket would look dandy on a lapel or even on a hatband with some sort of upscale lady's steampunk ensemble...

Trinket #141 - Braaaains Brooch

After a week of mass hysteria about the supposed rapture this weekend and a Saturday crammed full with kids' soccer games, Civil War reenactments, and even a bit of carpet shampooing - I'm officially exhausted. How exhausted, you ask? So much so that I started to wonder if I had fallen victim to the Zombie Apocalypse without realizing it.

I made this little brain (1.5 inches by 1 inch) from pearl white FIMO and gave it a nice glaze with some acrylic "blood". I finished it off with a pin back and passed the zombie test when it didn't whet my appetite one bit! I'm looking forward to wearing it to my next business meeting or otherwise serious outing.

Trinket #138 - Kitschy Chicken Brooch

That's a fun one to say, isn't it? Today's trinket combines two of my favorite things: 1940's kitsch and chickens. The fabric is a circle cut from a reproduction print, and the chicken charm is a vintage plastic bit that came with our house. Add a little hot glue, some fabric leaves, and a pin-back to that formula and you get this nifty little whatever for your hat or lapel!

Trinket #127 - Camping Brooch

This is a tiny brooch made to look like a bandanna. I'm jonesing for a camping trip and my subconscious is making sure I know it.

Trinket #111 - Devilish Brooch

This is what you get when you glue together a pile of random scraps, a lotteria card, and add a pin to the back. Tacky, but I love it.

Trinket #98 - Lucky Gambling Brooch

Yep, the first brooch of the project so far! No, I'm not a gambler, and though we joke about winning it often, we don't even play the lottery. This trinket was just a silly throw-together of whatever quirky things I could find without much hunting. I even broke out the hot glue and made this one an official Craft! In all seriousness, I do plan on picking up more pins and clips to make many fun and silly brooches in the future.
